Thomson Red Angus History

AT Thomson Red Angus, we have been raising registered livestock for five family generations.  My great, great, grandfather was raising Hereford cattle in Scotland a long...long... time ago. We started out with Hereford cattle that treated us very well for a long time, in fact my father still raises super Herefords. We started cross breeding some of these Hereford cows to Red Angus bulls and found out that it indeed was the magic cross.

In 1989, an opportunity to own our own registered Red Angus cattle became available from a very reputable breeder, one of the pioneer founders of the Red Angus breed in Canada.  Ken Frazer of Six Mile Red Angus, located at Fir Mountain, Saskatchewan, sold us our first 70 head of the top Red Angus females.  We were so impressed with this string of cattle, that years later we went back for another 40 head.  These Red Angus cows came from a super program and a breeder that knew what they were after and were strict enough to cull those animals from the herd that didn't measure up.

Over the years, with the breeding program we have implemented, we feel Thomson Red Angus has maintained and even improved this herd of red Angus cows. We are onto the next generation as our kids, CodWy, and Melissa, have taken a keen interest and are now raising some of their own Red Angus cattle here in Southern Alberta.  Our kids have done very well in 4-H and Junior shows locally - especially with their female cow-calf projects.

We take pride in the fact that ours is a family run ranch based on years of knowledge passed down from several generations of cattlemen. We feel there is value with being cow savvy and we have  lots of that to offer .

Our goal is to raise our family in the country where the living is clean and honest. A big thanks to our cowherd for helping us do that.

Thanks  also to the founders of Red Angus and  to our forefathers who were able to survive in agriculture and keep the family farm.
